Furry, devil-like figures burst into the room. They’re ringing bells, brandishing switches, causing a commotion–or, if you prefer, a “Krampus Rumpus”–and, generally, having a good time.
And they’re here to educate you on the joys of the Krampus, and to involve you in a new alternative Christmas celebration, with European roots, known as Krampusfest.
Artist Al Ridenour is one of the co-founders and co-directors of Krampus Los Angeles, a performance troupe created in 2013 to educate audiences on the European Krampus tradition. Krampus Los Angeles celebrates the Krampus with multi-venue Yuletide events incorporating art, music and theatre. This Christmas season, they’re planning four special events, including their popular “Krampus Ball” on December 6th and the world’s first English production of an Austrian Krampus play on December 13th.
Al talked about his experience creating Krampus Los Angeles with co-founder Al Guerrero, explained the Krampus’s background and offered a preview of 2014 Krampusfest.
