A purple cow posed for pictures. Presenters discussed vegan cooking, and “green” business practices. Exhibitors offered samples of organic soap, non-GMO chocolate and green tea.

The Green Festival, the nation’s largest and longest-running sustainability event, opened its first three-day event at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Friday, with a mix of creativity, mindfulness and networking.

"polar

As the Green Festival continues today and tomorrow in L.A., visitors can expect to see more than two hundred fifty “green” exhibitors. Festival program tracks include Business and Technology, with presentations on topics including green transportation and social change, and Home and Community, where speakers’ scheduled presentations include “Celebrating Our Natural Beauty” and “Building Leadership in Sustainable Development”. There will be a Family Fun Area, sponsored by Children’s Defense Alliance, and an all-levels yoga pavilion, as the Los Angeles Green Festival opens at ten this morning.

So, what might you see as you walk the exhibit floor? Well…

"green

You’ll get to meet a creative team with both environmental adventure stories for kids, and a free resource that teaches kids about environmental stewardship.

You’ll meet an entrepreneur with an original idea that may well get you started gardening indoors.

"sprouts"

You’ll encounter causes that will remind you: there’s a world out there, that can be changed for the better.

"tree""more

You’ll see the ways people are using creativity to address a problem…

And, you’ll be asked for your input–as Green Festival attendees vote which of five deserving nonprofits will receive the Green Festival Community Award. Be warned, this is a very tough choice!

"Rhianna"

And, as Green Festivals President Dr. Corinna Basler mentioned in an earlier interview, the food is unbelievable. While you can graze your way from the front to the back of the exhibit hall on the free samples, you very well may get tempted by the food court’s vegan offerings. Black-bean tamales are to die for–but be sure you save room for the organic chocolate samples a few aisles away.

And yes, this reporter can tell you that lavender vanilla non-GMO chocolates are worth the line you might expect, when someone says “free chocolate”. Couldn’t resist this one–purely in the interest of research, of course.
