“Are you an artist?” “Not yet.”

That was part of one conversation as dozens of people attended tonight’s Grand Opening of Urban Workshop, the new 5500-square-foot “maker space” facility in Irvine,.

"Maker

Visitors toured a facility that enables members to create just about anything–and includes a 3-D printer, wood shop, metal shop, electrical engineering area and etching equipment. However, those terms seem like an understatement.

"Maker

Perhaps a more accurate description requires pictures like this one–of the CNC (computer numeric control) router that was carving designs into wood.

"Maker

A sleek 3-D printer was part of the tour, as was a visit to the electrical engineering section.

"Maker

And staff members in the welding area allowed visitors to get their hands on and put a couple of pieces of metal together!

"Maker

"Maker

A demonstration of this new laser-cutting machine drew considerable interest.

"Maker

“You can etch into glass, etch on metals, cut plastic, cut into wood–that is actually a really, really cool machine,” said Urban Workshop Founder and CEO Steven Trinidade.

Visitors were offered literature about memberships, which work much like a gym membership: a month-to-month or yearly agreement, with a class list available. Membership requirements include abiding by a list of safety and shop rules. The current class list includes offerings like “Laser Cutting and Etching”, “Wood Shop Basics”, and “Dimension 3D Printer”. Individual classes are also available.

"Maker

Steven said Urban Workshop, which has been open since May, has had an overwhelming response from the community. “We’ve done very little advertising,” he said. “Most of it’s been word-of-mouth. Even before we moved to this building, we had people showing up at our previous location going, ‘Hey, when do we sign up? You open yet?’ The cool thing that came out of that was…we’ve had a ton of great helpers, helping us set this place up.”

While there are probably hundreds of membership-based maker shops throughout the country, Steven said most concentrate on one specific area, such as woodworking or 3-D printing. “If you go to one of those places, you can’t usually see any project you want to make all the way through,” he said. “I’ve been running an engineering company for the last ten years…so most of this stuff, I already had. For somebody to open this up from scratch (is prohibitively expensive).”

His vision for Urban Workshop’s future includes both expanding his maker space–and building a network and community of makers. “That’s what’s going to make this place really cool.,” he said, responding to a visitor who’d asked if he’d have a “connection board” listing members with specific skills. “You’re the electronics guy, you’re the software guy, you’re the fabricator…We can all teach each other, this should be a blast.”
