{"id":31501,"date":"2024-09-23T00:01:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T07:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/twomaverix.com\/?p=31501"},"modified":"2024-09-23T06:51:11","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T13:51:11","slug":"a-global-robotics-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twomaverix.com\/?p=31501","title":{"rendered":"A Global Robotics Journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"947\" src=\"https:\/\/twomaverix.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Photo-1024x947.png\" alt=\"Guillem Martinez Roura speaks onstage in front of a blue background with white lettering,\" class=\"wp-image-31502\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">(Photo courtesy of ITU, and used with permission.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.blubrry.com\/id\/136505383?cache=1727040415#textcolor-Dark&#038;backgroundcolor-ffffff\" title=\"Blubrry Podcast Player\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"165px\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s all the journey,&#8221; says International Telecommunications Union&#8217;s AI and Robotics Programme Officer Guillem Martinez Roura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s responding to a question about what student teams, in ITU&#8217;s brand-new &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/aiforgood.itu.int\/robotics-for-good-youth-challenge\/\">Robotics For Good Youth Challenge<\/a>&#8220;, will experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, ITU, the United Nations&#8217; specialized agency for information and communication technologies, announced the first edition of their &#8220;Robotics for Good Youth Challenge&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offered through <a href=\"https:\/\/aiforgood.itu.int\/\">AI for Good<\/a>, the United Nations&#8217; leading digital platform for reaching practical artifical intelligence solutions to global problems, this new challenge breaks new ground in several areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The challenge<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First of all, student teams must design and program autonomous robots.  Once the competition begins, teams cannot touch their robots on the game boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, those game boards&#8211;and the game materials with which the robots will be operating&#8211;are also something the student teams need to create, pre-challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, teams are encouraged to create more than one robot, to deploy in the course of the challenge.   (Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/s41721.pcdn.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Robotics-for-Good-Youth-Challenge-Rulebook.pdf\">link to Ai For Good&#8217;s handbook<\/a> on this year&#8217;s challenge.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And most importantly, while the challenge allows students to grow in their robotics skills, the goals reach far beyond the classroom and competition arenas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finalist teams will go to the 2025 AI For Good Global Summit, in Geneva, where they&#8217;ll compete with their robots, learn more about robotics and network with robotics professionals from around the world&#8211;sharing ideas that accelerate the UN&#8217;s Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to participate<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this inaugural Robotics for Good Youth Challenge, U.S. teams will compete virtually.  In other nations, including Spain, South Korea and Switzerland, in-person events will take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while the deadline for hosting a national event has closed for the 2024-2025 season, Guillem says prospective organizers are encouraged to check the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge page for dates to sign up to organize a national event in 2025!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, when can a U.S. team&#8211;or a student team in any other part of the world, for that matter&#8211;get involved?  According to AI for Good&#8217;s timeline, team registrations open in November.
